O Foolish Liberians...!

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Galatia, wrote in Galatians 3:1 “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?.”

Anytime the Bible speaks of fools or being foolish, it got nothing to do with IQ. Quite often (and I stand corrected), it is when those who ought to know better deliberately exchange truth for a lie or as we say in Liberia "act like bug-a-bug eat their brains." For example, those who believe there is no God are referred to as fools as documented in Psalm 14:1. A man who looks at sand and takes it for a solid ground to build his house on it is described by the all-knowing Jesus as a foolish man (Matthew 7:24-27).

When I read discussions concerning the Liberian war and war crimes or the Truth and Reconciliation Report, corruption in Liberian and Roberts Field (RIA) saga with references connection to the ongoing dual citizenship campaign, I cannot help but to paraphrase Apostle Paul and say “O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not look at the truth, before whose eyes the country and its people have suffered so much in the hands of domestic slave masters, wicked, corrupt  and incompetent government officials, armed bandits and loquacious buffoons posing as leaders?”

When I hear that no one should lift a finger or raise a voice against those who committed the most heinous atrocities in the Liberian civil war because all Liberians one way or the other contributed to the war, I say to myself “O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you?”

When a Truth and Reconciliation Commission that was set up simply ask for those who took part in the war to voluntarily confess their involvement and ask for forgiveness, few came forward and did just that; others justified the wrong they did. When the unapologetic ones, some of whom we saw on video killing other Liberians were given a slap on the wrist, and then I hear some argue that we let everyone off the hook because the commission did not reprimand 100% of the perpetrators, I am taken aback, “O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you?”

When we honor our killers and those who steal from us, set them up as gods over ourselves, worship them and offer our daughters and boys to them as burnt offerings to keep us connected, adorn them with flashy titles so that they remain almighty, my mouth is left wide open in awe sobbing "“O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you?”

When I hear some chastising others for recording corrupt government officials and questioning the legality of the recording although we have all witnessed how corruption has increased with every new government that comes to power, I groaned in disbelief “O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you?”

When natural born Liberians most of whom were chased out of their homes by rebels and became naturalized citizens in other countries fight to maintain their Liberian citizenship but met with so much resistance and insults by their fellow Liberians most of whom are direct beneficiaries of the good things those diaspora Liberians have acquired, I am left to ponder “O foolish Liberians, who hath bewitched you?”

Something must be terribly wrong. Unless the reason is that some spell has been cast on them, I don’t understand how and why Liberians most of whom are victims of corruption, abuse of power, war crimes and unimaginable evil will act as if they got no sense.
